La Reata is a fairly new steak house that’s at the north end of Bucerias on the northbound lateral directly next to the CFE building.
We showed up just before 6 PM on a Sunday in early May and were apparently the first to get seated for dinner. The atmosphere is a bit reminiscent of a warehouse, with tall ceilings and wide-open spaces. There were three projector screens showing the Red Bull Soap Box Derby and some 80’s – 90’s music playing in the background.
Our waiter spoke next to no English, but with our limited Spanish we were able to make do.
We ordered the “Arrachera”, which is referred to as skirt steak in the States to share between my wife and me and the “Macarrones con queso” (Mac N’ Cheese to us yanks) as well as a bottle of reserve Merlot from Chile. The arrachera was very tasty, with just a tiny bit of gristle which is not unusual for that cut of meat. The Macarrones were actually really good, my wife and I remarked on how we almost always don’t like mac n’ cheese when we order from a restaurant as it’s just too bland, but this definitely had a lot of flavors. My cardiologist might be a bit upset in my choices, but for tonight, let’s just keep him out of it. The wine was decent, just a bit too sweet and mildly high on tannins but considering we paid just under $30 for the bottle I wasn’t complaining too much.
All in (with the addition of two bottles of water) we paid 834 MXN (just over $46USD) with a generous tip included and I’d say it was a pretty good experience. I’ll definitely be back to try a more choice cut of meat like a rib eye (which is my favorite) especially since the place is just about a 5 minute walk from our condo.
